The Institute of Transplantation, in partnership with the Transplant Association, are developing a more focussed support provision for transplant patients and their immediate carers. Thanks to the Transplant Association all transplantation nurses in the Institute are being fully funded to attend counselling skills training.
A need was identified to empower and educate the nursing team to provide truly effective holistic care and support with confidence, to both carers and patients, the intention is to equip the team with skills that will enable them to build on their existing knowledge and expertise, recognise their limits of competence in therapeutic support and provide appropriate and qualified signposting where needed.
The first cohort has recently successfully completed the 12 week course. Having been afforded the opportunity by the Transplant Association the cohort has enhanced their counselling /helping and communication skills. This is apparent within the feedback questionnaires submitted at 3 key points during the course.
